President’s Message

Jessie Coffman, JLRV President 2025 – 2026

I was recently asked if the Junior League of Roanoke Valley is a philanthropic or service organization.  It’s both and a women’s leadership nonprofit.  The JLRV is a women’s volunteer and community engagement organization that is governed by its members, enabling the development of civic leadership skills.  Its tangible impact in the community is the work empowered by its annual grant cycle.

Our League is one of almost 300 around the world.  Each League studies what issues are facing its community and determines the best way it can help.  The Junior League of Roanoke Valley focuses on connecting the community to existing resources and removing barriers to healthcare and food.
In our 99th year, we should reflect on the JLRV’s philanthropic accomplishments, our League’s service to the Roanoke Valley, and the councils steered by transformational women’s leadership.  The Junior League of Roanoke Valley provides practical training opportunities that many women can’t get in the workplace.  Its members are well versed in Roberts Rules, running an effective meeting, planning and executing a premier fundraising event, referencing budget line items, and understanding the complex problems within their community.
We are a league of strong women who are committed to fostering connections.  This year’s theme is “Cultivating Community:  Joy through Service”.  Let us strengthen those personal relationships within JLRV and, as a group, strengthen our community relationships.  It’s up to us to remind the Valley where the League has been and where we’re taking it – together.
